Greg Kowalski, founder of New England Ninjutsu will be coming to Roots to teach a full weekend seminar in Ninjutsu and Self defense. Involved in the Martial Arts for over 30 years, NEN founder Greg Kowalski, is one of the first to have trained at length with Dr Hatsumi in Japan. Moving to Tokyo for that purpose in 1985, studying in Japan for over 4½ years and returning as often as possible, he was one of the first non-Japanese to earn his Black Belt in the art directly from the Grandmaster. One of the first foreigners accepted as a personal student of the Dr Hatsumi, Greg was also among the first Bujinkan members in the world to pass the Godan (5th Degree) test and attain full instructor status. Still actively training in the art, he remains one of the senior-most Bujinkan instructors in the world today. Besides extensive training in various forms of Ninpo Taijutsu, Mr. Kowalski also has a wide range of experience and expertise in a number of Martial Arts both here and in Japan.
This weekend will serve as an introduction to applying Ninpo Taijutsu skills 'In the Wild'. Ie, situations as they might occur while hiking, camping or in wilderness survival settings. Time permitting, special emphasis will be placed on improvised weaponary as well as using close-quarter weapons normally associated with wilderness / primitive skills such as staves, spears and various hand-held weapons. No prior martial arts experience is required.
Roots has been incorporating Ninjutsu into our courses for many years with the help and work of Ben Goodrich, himself a student of New England Ninjutsu. From what we have seen students who interact with this material not only gain skills in self defense, but in general body mechanics that impact many aspects of the skills Roots teaches, from throwing sticks to bow drill fire. This is an opportunity to focus in on Ninjutsu in a way we have not yet been able to offer.
