Clovis Program

The hunters of the village were the original heroes. Providing the very sustenance our bodies need was a position of responsibility native hunters strove to respect and honor. Before the age of gadgets and high powered weapons hunting pushed humans to their highest physical and mental potentials. All at once the hunt demands patience, awareness, strength, cunning, and deeply rooted connections to the land. Within hunting is wrapped important questions about life and death we all must learn to answer. In hunting we assure our understanding of the link between humans and the animals that support us. In September 2009 Roots School begins its first year of the Clovis program. The Clovis people were the great masters of the hunt, living through the last ice age 12,000 years ago through their skill, strength, and community. The Clovis Program is focused on the ancient human lineage of hunting and tracking and the lessons it has to teach us. The program takes place on location at Roots School, one day a week, from September to June. Each week the students will be guided to further their education of indigenous hunting including: * Hunting Ethics and Caretaking * Wildlife Tracking * Bird Language * Ecology and Natural History * Primitive Weapons-Throwing Sticks, Atl-Atls, Bows, Spears, Bolas, Slings * Survival Traps-Deadfalls and Snares * Skinning, Cleaning, and Processing Game * Hearth Cooking * Hide Tanning * Leather Working * Bone Carving & more…

It is the mission of the Clovis Program to bring children on the cusp of being young adults into a deeper relationship with their communities, both wild and human, through the roll of the provider. In learning these skills students may cultivate personal strength and understanding of oneself such as it has been across the earth and the ages. Each day at the Clovis Program includes time working on core skills such as tracking and awareness, time pursuing hands on projects with natural materials, and ample time learning from the landscape. As the months go by students begin to build their knowledge and understanding through practice and study, and experience the achievement of completing long term primitive skills projects. Students will also learn to guide some of their own learning as they choose which long term projects they would like to learn. Brad Salon and Abdul Mujib will be teaming up to instruct the Clovis Program with guest appearances from the rest of the Roots Staff throughout the year. In order to ensure student to teacher ratios we will be limiting the class size to ten students. Cost and Dates Cost: $1500 A deposit of $300 is due the time of registration.
